I was doing some research on the genre that I am writing Forbid Thy Love for and I found an interesting article. I can't exactly remember where I found it or what it was called because it's been months but the content stood out to me. The bit I do remember is the article was about J.K Rowling's experience as a new writer and in that article she talked about an experience at the bookstore. She saw young men checking out the fantasy (I believe it was fantasy or science fiction) and they found a book that interested them but didn't buy because a woman wrote it. That right there is what truly peeves me, men think we can't write books in other genres. They generally associate female authors with romance such as Stephenie Meyers with the Twilight series, or Erika Leonard best known as E L James author of Fifty Shades of Grey. Now I'm not saying that females don't predominantly write romance because they do, but it's aggravating when a woman wants to write something outside of Romance and is criticized and told no and to just stick to what we're good at.
This doesn't just apply to the writing world either. I've seen this everywhere because apparently we aren't good enough to write something like the Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini or paint like Picasso. It seems that because we do not share the same genitals that we are automatically inferior in our capabilities. Before I get hate, I want to mention that I know not all men do this, in fact some welcome the change of pace in this field but most want to try to make a female writer, painter, sculptor, etc. that we aren't ever going to be as good as them which I believe now we're beginning to shine truly because of all the women of our field becoming so well known and that is the right step. Sexism isn't ever going to go away but we can do what we can to ensure that we ignore their taunts and enjoy what we do.
This rant went on a little longer than I actually thought so I'm going to end this and get back to my writing before I drive myself insane.
Hope you all have a wonderful night~
